Gartner® Market Guide for AI Assistants for Infrastructure as Code

Gartner predicts that by 2029, 70% of enterprises will deploy agentic AI for IaC generation and drift remediation as a core part of IT infrastructure operations, up from less than 1% today.

Itential has been named a Representative Vendor in this inaugural Market Guide. Download the complimentary report to understand what separates production-ready platforms from point solutions – and what your team needs to get there.

Infrastructure Operations Is Entering Its Agentic Era

Traditional IaC approaches are deterministic and rigid, effective within their scope but accumulating technical debt and tool sprawl at the edges. General-purpose AI doesn’t resolve that. Without contextual grounding in live infrastructure state and organizational policy, it produces what Gartner calls “hallucinated configurations”: code that looks right, but wasn’t written for the environment it’s about to run in.

Gartner defining this category reflects a market that has reached a breaking point. The question is no longer whether AI will be part of infrastructure operations. It’s whether the AI your teams deploy can actually be trusted to act – safely, at scale, with full auditability.

What Gartner Found

The report identifies four forces reshaping how enterprises manage infrastructure:

  • 90% of I&O organizations will have integrated context-aware AI assistants into their IaC workflows by 2029, compared to 5% in 2026.
  • 70% will have deployed agentic AI for automated IaC generation and drift remediation as a core part of IT infrastructure operations, up from less than 1% today.
  • Day 2 operations – drift detection, remediation, cost-aware provisioning – are now first-class requirements, not post-deployment concerns.
  • The market is evolving in three stages: manual scripting → AI-assisted generation → intent-based agentic operations, where AI agents plan, generate, and deploy based on a stated goal. Most enterprises are still at stage one or two.

Itential Named a Representative Vendor in the Inaugural Market Guide

Itential was named a Representative Vendor in the Gartner® Market Guide for AI Assistants for Infrastructure as Code, published March 2026 – alongside HashiCorp, IBM/Red Hat, GitLab, Harness, and Pulumi.

Where most vendors are extending toward agentic capabilities, the Itential Platform was architected for them. The platform connects AI reasoning to deterministic, governed execution across the full infrastructure lifecycle – from initial provisioning through ongoing Day 2 operations.

FlowAgents take real action on infrastructure: provisioning, configuring, and remediating across the tools enterprises already depend on. Every action is grounded in live infrastructure state, validated against organizational policy, and executed with a complete audit trail.

Agentic Reasoning with Guardrails
FlowAI and FlowAgents translate natural language intent into governed, deterministic infrastructure actions. Engineers direct outcomes; the platform handles execution.

Deterministic Execution at Scale
Every action is grounded in live infrastructure state and validated against organizational policy – eliminating the hallucinated configurations that make generic LLMs unsuitable for production.
Integration Across the Stack
The platform connects to any tool, system, or cloud environment in the enterprise, ensuring AI-generated actions execute within – not in isolation from – the environments they’re changing.

Day 2 Operations, Built In
Drift detection, compliance validation, configuration remediation, and cost-aware provisioning are first-class platform capabilities, not afterthoughts.
By 2029, 70% of enterprises will deploy agentic AI for automated IaC generation and drift remediation as a core part of IT infrastructure operations – compared to less than 1% in 2026.
